Infinitum Nihil Acquires 'In The Hand Of Dante

Dec 2, 2008

According to Variety Johnny Depp's production company Infinitum Nihil has acquired screen rights to the Nick Tosches novel "In the Hand of Dante." The novel will be developed as a potential star vehicle for Johnny who will produce with his Infinitum Nihil partner and sister Christi Dembrowski. The company, which has a first-look deal with Warner Bros. and Graham King's GK Films, optioned the book with its own coin. The Book revolves around Dante's masterwork "The Divine Comedy," and tells parallel storylines involving Dante in 14th-century Italy as he tries to complete the work, and a contemporary storyline involving Tosches, who is asked to authenticate what might be Dante's original manuscript. Depp would play Tosches. The novel was published in 2002.

Variety also mention The Rum Diary and Shantaram but the news is that Johnny Will not be in Shantaram although it is a possibility he will still be Producing if the film ever gets made. The Rum Diary is another movie that is currently still being produced by Infinitum Nihil and maybe Johnny has been working behind the scenes to get this made, however what I do know is that 2009 was the supposed to be the release date for the movie with 2008 set aside for filming. We shall just have to wait and see.

Deep in the lowest reaches of the Vatican library, a secret chamber is opened for the first time in centuries. Inside it is an object of inestimable value: the manuscript of The Divine Comedy, written in Dante's own hand.
The priest who finds this treasure spirits it away to his home in Sicily, where it comes into the grasp of more worldly parties. And so in New York a few weeks later, a sometime writer, sometime thief named Nick Tosches gets a phone call from a friend. There's an item he wants him to look at, a manuscript that needs authentication. Tosches recognizes the pages for what they are—and embarks on the most harrowing adventure of his life.

As this story unfolds, so too does a parallel tale: the odyssey, seven hundred years ago, of Dante himself, a man trying to weave out of the grossness of his own humanity a poem that contains the sum of the world's wisdom and the very breath of the diving.
